BACK ON TRACK: Laura Kelly Fights For Kansas Public Schools

Overland Park–Today, Governor Laura Kelly set the record straight at the Johnson County Bar Association debate regarding her track record supporting public schools. Instead of continuing to wage partisan political battles, Governor Kelly is focused on strengthening the state’s economic development tools – especially Kansas’ education system.

“Laura Kelly is a long-time advocate for Kansas public schools and her record shows she can work with both parties to deliver for Kansans,” campaign spokesperson Madison Andrus said. “Sam Brownback and his top defender, Derek Schmidt, destroyed Kansas’ public education system. Make no mistake – it was Governor Kelly who put us back on track. Kansans see how far we’ve come in just four years, and they don’t want to go back to underfunded schools. Kansans want four more years of fully funded public schools, four more years of investing in our childrens’ futures, and four more years of Governor Kelly.”

After inheriting an education system that was chronically underfunded, Governor Kelly secured full funding for Kansas public schools four years in a row and put the education system back on track. Laura ended a lengthy cycle of litigation that was spearheaded by Sam Brownback and his top defender, Derek Schmidt.

In addition to fully funding public schools, Governor Kelly recommended the Legislature increase funding for special education services by $30 million, expanded the Mental Health Intervention Program to protect our children, and invested in computer science and STEM education to make sure our kids are prepared for the workforce.

Parents, teachers, and students agree: Governor Kelly is the right choice to protect Kansas public schools and give our children the world-class education they deserve. Laura has been endorsed by over 125 current and former Kansas educatorsmultiple education advocacy groups, and teachers unions.
